Cape Cobra Leathercraft is a third-generation, women-led family business dedicated to crafting luxury handbags and accessories from sustainably sourced specialty leathers. Founded in 1972, we are Africa’s longest-standing luxury leather goods atelier, a true pioneer in the art of fine leathercraft. Our name is inspired by the Cape Cobra, a symbol of the natural beauty and rich heritage of South Africa - the place we proudly call home. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted in our atelier in Woodstock, Cape Town, where Justine Schäfer continues her family’s legacy as third generation.
Together with a team of 65 artisans, Justine leads with passion, combining timeless tradition and contemporary elegance to create leather goods that are as unique as those who carry them.

From the ethical sourcing of Nile crocodile and ostrich leathers to the intricate details in every stitch, our creations are made to endure - heirloom pieces that transcend trends and celebrate Africa’s artisan heritage.
Our Beginnings
Renowned for its exquisite craftsmanship and rich heritage, the brand’s story began in the 1950s with the late Lothar Schäfer - a master artisan of maroquinerie who trained in the leather ateliers of Offenbach, Germany.
A life-changing journey to Egypt led Lothar to Denise, his future wife, of Franco-Italian and Lebanese descent. United by a shared vision and passion for craftsmanship, the couple traveled down the African continent, ultimately settling in Cape Town - where European leathercraft met African soul.
In their humble home workshop, Lothar and Denise handcrafted their first leather handbags, blending classical European techniques with locally sourced materials and the vibrant energy of South Africa. This fusion laid the foundation for Cape Cobra Leathercraft, now Africas longest standing atelier for high-end leather goods.
Over the decades, Cape Cobra has grown into an internationally respected, family-owned business. The brand has manufactured for some of the world’s most prestigious luxury fashion houses while remaining rooted in its values of authenticity, quality, and sustainability.

From raw material sourcing to final product creation, every stage is executed locally.
